Don Fowler, Senior Consultant to The Rhoads Group, has been in the field of advertising and public relations since 1975. In January 1997, he completed a two-year term as National Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. During his lengthy career, Dr. Fowler has handled state and federal government relations projects for a diverse group of clients including the Coalition for Auto Repair Equality, PLATO Learning Inc., the South Carolina Credit Union League, and the Central Midwest Compact Commission; as well as marketing studies, advertising, public relations and marketing programs for clients ranging from Kawasaki Motorcycles Corporation to the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Fowler has taught Public Administration and American Politics at the University of South Carolina and Wofford College since 1964. In addition to being the author of numerous articles for professional and trade journals, newspapers, and other local, regional and national publications, Dr. Fowler has lectured, conducted research and observed elections in Costa Rica, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Kosovo, and Russia. Dr. Fowler is a former member of the Board of Trustees of Wofford College, the Board of Visitors at the Medical University of South Carolina, and is currently on the Board of Voorhees College and the Martin School of Public Policy at the University of Kentucky. He is a member of the American Political Science Association, Phi Beta Kappa, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Church Council of Washington Street United Methodist Church. He was married to Septima Twyford Briggs for 40 years prior to her death in 1997. They have two children - Donnie, who is a business and political executive in California, and Cissy, who has a Ph.D. in anthropology and is a post-doctoral Research Associate with the U.S. Forest Service, and teaches at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Dr. Fowler holds a B.A. degree in Psychology from Wofford College, a Master's degree in Public Administration and a Doctorate in Political Science from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Fowler retired as a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve, where he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit; and is a graduate of the Army War College.
